Morocco pushes for international cooperation to prevent nuclear terrorism

Geneva - Morocco expressed, on Tuesday in Geneva, its concern over international terrorism networks' recourse to advanced means to carry out destructive attacks, insisting that international cooperation is more than ever required to prevent nuclear terrorism.

Morocco's permanent representative to the UN office at Geneva said the Kingdom, aware of this mounting threat to international security, has endorsed the international community's efforts to combat this scourge which is justified by no cause.

Omar Hilale, who addressed the 2010 session of the Conference on Disarmament, recalled that Morocco organized, on June 3-5, 2009, an international seminar on the prevention of the illicit traffic in nuclear and radioactive materials.

"International terrorists no longer make a secret of their intention to acquire or make dirty bombs to provoke psychological shocks, by causing the highest number of victims among civilians. This is why international cooperation is more than ever required,” the diplomat said.

He stressed that Morocco endorses the UN Secretary-General’s hope that the year 2010 will be a landmark year of disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation.
