Morocco at forefront of countries to rescue Haiti after quake, diplomatGeneva - Morocco, who has always cherished the values of solidarity and universal humanist principles mainly towards the countries of the south, was at the forefront of the countries that came to the rescue of the people of Haiti, Moroccan ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva Omar Hilale said.
The Moroccan diplomat, who was speaking at the 13th special session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) to support the recovery process in Haiti after the massive January 12 earthquake, recalled that HM King Mohammed VI had immediately dispatched a 1 million dollar- humanitarian aid to Haitians in addition to the contribution of the Moroccan Red Crescent. The immensity of the human and material losses justifies this special meeting, Hilale said. "Our meeting today is expected to address the fallouts of the earthquake on the ability of local population to enjoy their basic human rights," he added. The Moroccan diplomat hailed the timely response of the international community to assist the people of Haiti, noting the overwhelming and complex challenges in the field. This requires, he said, a coordinated and sustained action at the levels of governments, the UN, civil society and the private sector, adding that the contribution of the Council in the reconstruction efforts is a moral duty and an obligation stated by the international law. The special session of the Human Rights Council was requested by Brazil and was supported by 32 of the body’s 47 members.
