Morocco among 'most open countries' in MENA region, HRW

Rabat - Morocco is one of the most open countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch's MENA division Sarah Leah Whitson said on Wednesday.

The fact that this press conference is being held in Morocco to present the HRW 2009 world report testifies to the openness of this country, Sarah Leah Whitson said.

Morocco witnessed, since the beginning of the nineties, a progress in terms of human rights and was a pioneer in this field compared to the other countries of the region, she added.

Morocco enjoys press freedom and a dynamic civil society, she noted, expressing the hope to see the kingdom boost its achievements in the years to come.

She voiced satisfaction with the announcement made by HM King Mohammed VI about the justice reform project, calling upon all Moroccan society's actors to contribute to making this process succeed.
