MCC program to have positive impact on Morocco

Washington - The socio-economic development projects launched in Morocco, as part of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) program, will have a "very positive" impact on the country, MCC-Morocco Resident Country Director, Muneera Salem-Murdock, said on Wednesday.

"We have a large-scale program and I am sure that it will have a very positive impact mainly on farmers," Murdock said on the sidelines of a meeting that brought together MCC Resident Country Directors from 19 countries worldwide.

She noted that the cooperation program, set with Morocco, is marked by "complementarity" between the different projects.

For his part, MCC Deputy Vice President for Africa, Jonathan Bloom, underlined the progress made since the launch of the MCC-Morocco cooperation program, stressing the need to speed up the implementation of the ongoing projects in line with the fixed deadlines.

In August 2007, the MCC signed a five-year $697.5 million Compact with Morocco to stimulate economic growth through investments in five projects. The compact seeks to increase productivity and improve employment in high potential sectors such as fruit tree productivity, small-scale fisheries, and artisan crafts. Small business creation and economic growth will also be supported by investments in financial services and enterprise support.
