Morocco urges UN SC to adopt autonomy project as basis for negotiation

Rabat - Morocco called upon the UN Security Council to adopt the autonomy project put forward by the Kingdom as a basis for negotiations to get out of the impasse facing the Sahara issue.

The call was made by State minister Mohamed El Yazghi, who said the project is well thought-out, providing for a local parliament and a government with large powers.

He added, in an interview with the Moroccan French-speaking daily "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" published on Friday, that the Security Council, which welcomed the Moroccan proposal, should present the project with all its details and incorporate it into its resolution, due next April.

The United Nations has opted for the political solution, in accordance with which the Secretary-General's personal representatives are working, El Yazghi underlined.

On regionalisation, the official said the latest speech of HM king Mohammed VI was a very strong signal that Morocco is moving forward and cannot wait for another decade of procrastinations by the other parties.

Regions, political and administrative entities with social and economic developmental framework are the future of Morocco, said El Yazghi, adding that the Advisory Committee on Regionalisation will work on a wholly Moroccan model which takes into account Morocco’s history and sociology.
