Morocco's initiative part of realistic vision to solve Sahara issue, official

Dakhla (south) - Morocco's project to grant substantial autonomy to its southern provinces is part of a realistic vision to solve the Sahara issue, said Wali of Oued-Eddahab-Lagouira and Governor of the province of Oued-Eddahab, Hamid Chabar said on Saturday.

Chabar who met with journalists who took part in the 56th meeting of the International Ski Club (SCIJ), held in Marrakech (January 23-30), said this courageous solution reflects Morocco's firm will to move forward towards a fair and an applicable solution to the Sahara issue in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Former ambassador of Morocco to the UN, Chabar gave a  historical overview of the Sahara issue and the efforts made by the Kingdom to settle this issue, deploring the attitude of the other parties, Algeria and the Polisario who hold on to an old and unrealistic stance instead of adhering to the dynamic spurred by this serious initiative.

The proposal is a win-win solution, Chabar said, adding that it will put an end to the suffering of the population sequestered in the camps of Tindouf (Southwestern Algeria).

The 56th SCIJ brought together over 200 journalists from 33 countries.
