Renewable energy: UK keen to promote strategic partnership with Morocco, official

London - The United Kingdom is keen to promote a strategic partnership with Morocco in the field of energy, British Secretary of State for Energy Lord Philip Hunt told MAP on Tuesday.

We are resolved to work with the Moroccan government to develop new energy resources, the minister said on the sidelines of a conference in the British parliament on the Desertec project.

Lord Hunt voiced satisfaction with Morocco's approach vis-ŕ-vis renewable energy, describing its interest in the Desertec project as innovative and ambitious.

For his part, spokesperson of the British conservative party (opposition) for climate change, Charles Hendry highlighted that the field of renewable energy offers important cooperation opportunities between Morocco and Great Britain.

The UK takes seriously the challenges of climate change as well as the exhaustion of energy traditional resources and is eager to explore new cooperation opportunities with countries such as Morocco which has excellent potential in the area of solar and wind energy, he said.

Echoing him, spokesperson of the British liberal democratic party for climate change, Symon Hughes underlined that the north African country has an important role in the materialization of this landmark project.

Morocco developed a know-how in this field which enables it to have a leading role in the Middle East and North Africa region, he added.

Desertec is a concept for making use of solar and wind energy in the deserts of the MENA region.
