Over 8 million tourists visited Morocco in 2009Rabat - Some 8.34 million tourists visited Morocco in 2009, that is a 6 % rise compared to 2008, said the Tourism Department.
The French topped the list with 3.1 million tourists (+4%), followed by the Spaniards (1.8 million tourists, +10%), the Belgians (469.000 tourists, +12%), the Dutch (443.000 tourists, +12%), the Germans (423.000 tourists, +1%), the Britons (362.000 tourists, -7%) and the Italians (318.000 tourists, +11%). Despite the rise in tourists’ arrivals, overnight stays decreased 1% in 2009 to reach some 16.2 million. The Tourism Department said the downward trend in overnight stays is partly due to the decrease posted in the three main tourist destinations, namely Marrakech (-1%), Agadir (-4%) and Casablanca (-1%). Tourism receipts reached some 52.8 billion dirhams ($ 6.5 bln), that is a decline of 5% compared to 2008.
