Morocco seeks to achieve 42 % of renewable energy in energy productionOuarzazate - The solar energy project devised by Morocco aims at raising the share of renewable energy in energy production to 42 % by 2020 as against 26 % now.
In a report before H.M. the King Mohammed VI, managing director of the National Electricity Utility (ONE), Ali Fassi Fihri, said that renewable energies' national production in 2020 will be equally divided between solar, wind and hydroelectric energy with 14 % each. Fassi Fihri said that the project will have a positive impact on the regions targeted (Ouarzazate, Ain Bni Mathar, Foum Al Oued, Boujdour and Sebkhat Tah). The project will help create a course of study dedicated to solar energy in engineering schools and universities. Worth 9 billion dollars, the project seeks to achieve a 2,000-megawatt capacity by 2020.
